It might sound like a stupid joke, or an-attention grabbing scheme,but the woman selling her soul, identified as Lori N., and said her eBay ad is a cry for help. ”I guess you could say that. I’m at the point now, I’m tired. I don’t feel good. I’m near the end of my rope. I really am,” she told WOAI. Up until five years ago, Lori was living a normal life and made a living as a freelance writer, but a serious car accident completely changed her life. She was a passenger in a car hit by a drunk driver, and the repercussions were dire. The poor woman was in a coma for three weeks, and woke up suffering from a stroke, a broken hip, broken pelvis, leg, collarbone, sternum, ribs, and a collapsed lung. And if that wasn’t bad enough, she lost one of her breasts. Lori N. is a freelance writer who can’t write much anymore and gets by on part-time inventory work. So she figured if she can’t use her body anymore, why nor market her soul? ”What I’m goingto deliver is the opportunity for someone to save my soul,” Lori says. “They can save it through prayer; they can save it through conversion. The concept of light tree is introduced in a wavelength routed optical network, whichemploys wavelength -division multiplexing (WDM). Depending on the underlying physical topology networks can be classified into three generations: a). First Generation: these networks do not employ fiberoptic technology; instead they employ copper-based ormicrowave technology. E.g. Ethernet. b).Second Generation: these networks use optical fibers for data transmission but switching is performed in electronic domain. E.g. FDDI. c).Third Generation: in these networks both data transmission and switching isperformed in optical domain. E.g. WDM. WDM wide area networks employ tunable lasers and filters at access nodes and optical/electronic switches at routing nodes. An access node may transmit signals ondifferent wavelengths, which are coupled into the fiber using wavelength multiplexers. An optical signalpassing through an optical wavelength-routing switch (WRS) may be routed from anoutput fiber without undergoing opto-electronic conversion. A light path is an all-optical channel, which may be used to carry circuit switched traffic, and it may span multiple fiber links. Assigning a particular wavelength to it sets these up. In the absenceof wavelength converters, a light path would occupy the same wavelength continuity constraint. A light path can create logical(or virtual) neighbors out of nodes that may be geographically far apart fromeach other. A light path carries not only the direct traffic between the nodes it interconnects, but also the traffic from nodes upstream of the source to nodes upstream of the destination. A major objective of light path communication is to reduce the number of hops a packet has to traverse. Under light path communication, the network employs an equal number of transmitters and receivers because each light path operates on a point-to-point basis. However this approachis not able to fully utilize all of the wavelengths on all of the fiber links in the network,also it is not able to fully exploit all the switching capability of each WRS. A light tree is a point to pointmultipoint all optical channel, which may span multiple fiber links. Hence, a light tree enables single-hop communication between a source node and a set of destination nodes. Thus, a light tree based virtual topology can significantly reduce the hop distance, thereby increasing the network throughput. Requirements: 1. Multicast -capable wavelength routing switches (MWRS) at every node in the netwok. 2. More optical amplifiers in the network.

Polyfuse is a new standard for circuit protection. It is resettable. Many manufacturers also call it polyswitch or multifuse. Polyfuses are not fuses but polymeric positive temperature co-efficient (PPTC) thermistors. Current limiting can be accomplished by using resistors , fuses , switches or positive temperature co-efficient devices. Resistors are rarely an acceptable solution because the high power resistors that are usually required are expensive. One-shot fuses can be used, but they might fatigue, and they must be replaced after a fault event. Ceramic PTC devices tends to have high resistance and power dissipation characteristics. The preferred solution is a PPTC device which has low resistance in normal operation and high resistance when exposed to a fault. Electrical shorts or electrically over-loaded circuits can cause over-current and over temperature damage. Like traditional fuses , PPTC devices limit the flow of dangerously high current during fault conditions. Unlike traditional fuses, PPTC devices reset after the fault is cleared and the power to the circuit is removed. THE BASICS Technically, polyfuses are not fuses but polymeric positive temperature co-efficient (PPTC) thermistors. For thermistors characterized as positive temperature co-efficient , the device resistance increases with temperature. These comprise thin sheets of conductive plastic with electrodes attached to either side. The conductive plastic is basically a non-conductive crystalline polymer loaded with a highly conductive carbon to make it conductive.The electrodes ensure even distribution of power throughout the device. Polyfuses are usually packaged in radial, axial, surface- mount, chip, disk orwasher form, these are available in voltage ratings of 30 to 250 volts and current ratings of 20Ma to 100 amps. OPERATING PARAMETERS FOR POLYFUSES:: 1) INITIAL RESISTANCE:- The resistance of the device as received from the factory of manufacturing. 2) OPERATING VOLTAGE:- The maximum voltage a device can withstand without damage at the rated current. 3) HOLDING CURRENT:- Safe current through the device. 4) TRIP CURRENT:- Where thedevice interrupts the current. 5) TIME TO TRIP:- The time it takes for the device to trip at a given temperature. 6) TRIPPED STATE:- Transition from the low resistance state to the high resistance state due to an overload. 7) LEAKAGE CURRENT:- A small value of stray current flowing through the device after it has switched to high resistance mode. 8) TRIP CYCLE:- The number of trip cycles (at rated voltage and current) the device sustains without failure. 9) TRIP ENDURANCE:- The duration of time the device sustains its maximum rated voltage in the tripped state without failure. 10) POWER DISSIPATION:- Power dissipated by the device in its tripped state. 11) THERMAL DURATION:- Influence of ambient temperature. 12) HYSTERESIS:- The period between the actual beginning of the signaling of the device to trip and the actual tripping of the device.

Requirements for removable media storage devices (RMSDs) used with personal computers have changed significantly since the introduction of the floppy disk in 1971. At one time, desktop computers dependedon floppy disks for all of their storage requirements. Even with the advent of multigigabyte hard drives, floppy disks and other RMSDsare still an integral part of most computer systems, providing. ¢ Transport between computers for data files and software ¢ Backup to preserve data from the hard dive ¢ A way to load the operatingsystem software in the eventof a hard failure. Data storage devices currently come in a variety ofdifferent capacities, access time, data transfer rate and cost per Gigabyte. The best overall performance figures are currently achieved using hard disk drives (HDD), whichcan be integrated into RAID systems (reliable arrays of inexpensive drives) at costsof $10 per GByte (1999). Optical disc drives (ODD) and tapes can be configured in the form of jukeboxes and tape libraries, with cost of a few dollars per GByte for the removable media. However, the complex mechanical library mechanism serves to limit data access time to several seconds and affects the reliability adversely. Most information is still stored in non-electronic form, with very slow access and excessive costs (e.g., text on paper, at a cost of$10 000 per GByte). Some RMSD options available todayare approaching the performance, capacity, and cost of hard-disk drives. Considerations for selecting an RMSD include capacity, speed, convenience, durability, data availability, and backward-compatibility. Technology options used to read and write data include. ¢ Magnetic formats that use magnetic particles and magnetic fields. ¢ Optical formats that use laser light and optical sensors. ¢ Magneto-optical and magneto-optical hybrids that use a combination of magneticand optical properties to increase storage capacity. The introduction of the Fluorescent Multi-layer Disc (FMD) smashes the barriers of existing data storage formats. Depending on the application and the market requirements, the first generation of 120mm (CD Sized) FMD ROM discs will hold 20 - 100 GigaBytes of pre -recorded data on 12 - 30 data layers with a total thickness of under 2mm.In comparison, a standard DVD disc holds just 4.7 gigabytes.With C3D's (Constellation 3D) proprietary parallel reading and writing technology, data transfer speeds can exceed 1 gigabit per second, again depending on the application and market need. WHY FMD? Increased Disc Capacity DVD data density (4.7 GB) on each layer of data carriers up to 100 layers. Initially, theFMD disc will hold anywhere from 25 - 140 GB of data depending on market need. Eventually a terabyte of dataon a single disc will be achievable. Quick Parallel Access and Retrieval of Information Reading from several layers at a ime and multiple tracks at a time nearly impossible using the reflective technology of a CD/DVD - is easily achieved in FMD. This will allow for retrieval speedsof up to 1 gigabyte per second. Media Tolerances By using incoherent light to read data the FMD/FMC mediawill have far fewer restrictions in temperature range, vibration and air- cleanness during manufacturing. And will provide a considerably more robust data carrier than existing CD and DVDs.

While early computer systems were designed and used for tasks that involved little interactions between theuser and the computer, today's graphical and multimedia information and computing environments require information displays that have higher performance, smaller size and lower cost. The market for display technologies also has been stimulated by the increasing popularity of hand-held computers, personal digital assistants and cellular phones; interest in simulated environments and augmentedreality systems; and the recognition that an improved means of connecting people and machines can increase productivity and enhance theenjoyment of electronic entertainment and learning experiences. For decades, the cathode raytube has been the dominant display device. The cathode ray tube creates an image byscanning a beam of electronsacross a phosphor-coated screen, causing the phosphors to emit visible light. The beam is generated by an electron gun and is passed through a deflection system that scans the beam rapidly left to right and top tobottom, a process called Rastering. A magnetic lens focuses the beam to create asmall moving dot on the phosphor screen. It is these rapidly moving spots of light ("pixels") that raster or"paint"the image on the surface of the viewing screen. Flat panel displays are enjoying widespread usein portable computers, calculators and other personal electronics devices.Flat panel displays can consist of hundreds of thousands of pixels, each of which is formed by one or more transistors acting on a crystalline material. In recent years, as the computer and electronics industries have made substantial advances in miniaturization, manufacturers have sought lighter weight, lower power and more cost-effective displays to enable the development of smaller portable computers and other electronic devices. Flat panel technologies have made meaningful advances in theseareas. Both cathode ray tubes and flat panel display technologies, however, pose difficult engineering and fabrication problems for morehighly miniaturized, high-resolution displays because of inherent constraints in size, weight, cost and power consumption. In addition, both cathode ray tubes and flat panel display are difficult to see outdoors or in other setting where the ambient light is brighter than the light emitted from the screen. Display mobility is also limited by size, brightness and power consumption. As display technologies attempt to keep pace with miniaturization and other advances in information delivery systems, conventional cathode ray tube and flat panel technologies will no longer beable to provide an acceptablerange of performance characteristics, particularly the combination of high resolution, high level of brightness and low power consumption, required for state-of-the-art mobile computing or personal electronic devices.

A quiet revolution is taking place. Over the past few years, the density of the average programmable logic device has begun to skyrocket. The maximum number of gates in an FPGA is currently around 500,000 and doubling every 18 months. Meanwhile, the price of these chips is dropping. What all of this means is thatthe price of an individual NAND or NOR is rapidly approaching zero! And the designers of embedded systems are taking note. Some system designers are buying processor cores and incorporating them into system-on-a-chip designs; others are eliminating the processor and software altogether, choosing an alternative hardware-only design. As this trend continues, it becomes more difficult to separate hardware from software. After all, both hardware and software designers are now describinglogic in high-level terms, albeit in different languages, and downloading the compiledresult to a piece of silicon. Surely no one would claim that language choice alone marks a real distinction between the two fields. Turing's notion of machine-level equivalence and the existence of language-to-language translators have long ago taught us all that that kind of reasoning isfoolish. There are even now products that allow designersto create their hardware designs in traditional programming languages like C. So language differences alone are not enough of a distinction. Both hardware and software designs are compiled from a human-readable form into a machine-readable one. And both designs are ultimately loaded into some piece of silicon. Does it matter that one chip is a memory device and the other a piece of programmable logic? If not, how else can we distinguish hardware from software? Regardless of where the line is drawn, there will continue to be engineers like you and me who cross the boundary in our work. So rather than try to nail down a precise boundary between hardware and software design, we must assume that there will be overlap in the two fields. And we must all learn about new things. Hardware designers must learn how to write better programs, and software developers must learn how to utilize programmable logic. TYPES OF PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC Many types of programmable logic are available. The current range of offerings includes everything from small devices capable of implementing only a handful of logic equations to huge FPGAs that can hold an entireprocessor core (plus peripherals!). In addition to this incredible difference in size there is also much variation in architecture. In this section, I'll introduce youto the most common types of programmable logic and highlight the most important features of each type. PLDs At the low end of the spectrum are the original Programmable Logic Devices (PLDs). These were the first chips that could be used to implement a flexible digital logic design in hardware. In other words, you could remove a couple of the 7400-series TTL parts (ANDs, ORs, and NOTs) from your board and replace them with a single PLD. Other names you might encounter for this class of device are Programmable Logic Array (PLA), Programmable Array Logic (PAL), and Generic Array Logic (GAL)
