WEB DESIGNING TRICKS The Web is a visual medium. An effectively designed Web site must wow, tease, and compel your audience to step in and explore what you have to offer. To create an effective web site, you must first understand the basic rules governing Web design. Here I've given few ideas to create a good web site. Remember the purpose of your web site - Now this seems obvious but I've been to quite a few sites where I was able to find dancing gifs and cute little sayings but not the information I was looking for. Images and other extras are good for your site as long as they contribute to its purpose and not distract from it. Make it easy - Make sure your site is easy to navigate. If your visitors have to spend to much time trying to find things they will go elsewhere. Remember the limitations of your visitors - Not everyone has the top of the line computer, latest browser of high speed internet connection. Keep these people in mind when setting up a sight. Always make large images optional - Large images take more time to download. Always use smaller images with a link to the larger one if people want to wait. Never use music - Everyone has different tastes and while you may think that having pink Floyd or Garth Brooks playing for your visitor when they enter your site is cool, most will find it annoying and leave. Avoid tacky backgrounds - Don't use a tiled image background or a bright glaring color, it is too hard on the eyes. Site name - Choosing a name for your site is important. It needs to be individual, unique, reflect the content and purpose of the site, and be short, snappy and memorable. Site structure - Your web site can be as small or as large as you want it to be - it's up to you. Some sites consists of just one page (the home page), others consist of hundreds of pages. The object of a web site is to attract as many people as possible. If you're going for more than one page, think of your web site as a building - the more rooms it has the more interesting and attractive it will be to more people who will be attracted by the content of a particular room. You will need: Home page - this will be the normal entrance to the site which announces you, your web site and your message. Core pages - the ones with the meat, the important information. Special interest pages - each covers a specific angle. Doorway pages - these are designed specifically to attract Internet surfers. Using the analogy of a building, then unlike a modern building where you want to channel everyone in and out of the front door - for security purposes - with a web site you want to create as many doors (entrances) as possible. Each page (doorway) is another opportunity to be found in the search engines. At the bottom of each doorway page, the person is invited to visit the main page or other pages. Improving your ranking with the search engines - Research suggests that for surfers to find your site it must appear within the first three pages of the results returned by the search engine. Usually, this means in the top 30 sites listed. Aim always for the top ten. You can improve your rankings in the search engine by using keywords in the form of HTML meta tags. Meta tags are NOT a magic solution - they're just one component in your visibility strategy. Finally, don't be in too much of a hurry to register your site. Get it set up and make it rich with content first.
