At one time, desktop computers dependedon floppy disks for all of their storage requirements. Even with the advent of multigigabyte hard drives, floppy disks and other RMSDsare still an integral part of most computer systems, providing. ¢ Transport between computers for data files and software ¢ Backup to preserve data from the hard dive ¢ A way to load the operatingsystem software in the eventof a hard failure. Data storage devices currently come in a variety ofdifferent capacities, access time, data transfer rate and cost per Gigabyte. The best overall performance figures are currently achieved using hard disk drives (HDD), whichcan be integrated into RAID systems (reliable arrays of inexpensive drives) at costsof $10 per GByte (1999). Optical disc drives (ODD) and tapes can be configured in the form of jukeboxes and tape libraries, with cost of a few dollars per GByte for the removable media. However, the complex mechanical library mechanism serves to limit data access time to several seconds and affects the reliability adversely. Most information is still stored in non-electronic form, with very slow access and excessive costs (e.g., text on paper, at a cost of$10 000 per GByte). Some RMSD options available todayare approaching the performance, capacity, and cost of hard-disk drives. Considerations for selecting an RMSD include capacity, speed, convenience, durability, data availability, and backward-compatibility. Technology options used to read and write data include. ¢ Magnetic formats that use magnetic particles and magnetic fields. ¢ Optical formats that use laser light and optical sensors. ¢ Magneto-optical and magneto-optical hybrids that use a combination of magneticand optical properties to increase storage capacity. The introduction of the Fluorescent Multi-layer Disc (FMD) smashes the barriers of existing data storage formats. Depending on the application and the market requirements, the first generation of 120mm (CD Sized) FMD ROM discs will hold 20 - 100 GigaBytes of pre -recorded data on 12 - 30 data layers with a total thickness of under 2mm.In comparison, a standard DVD disc holds just 4.7 gigabytes.With C3D's (Constellation 3D) proprietary parallel reading and writing technology, data transfer speeds can exceed 1 gigabit per second, again depending on the application and market need. WHY FMD? Increased Disc Capacity DVD data density (4.7 GB) on each layer of data carriers up to 100 layers. Initially, theFMD disc will hold anywhere from 25 - 140 GB of data depending on market need. Eventually a terabyte of dataon a single disc will be achievable. Quick Parallel Access and Retrieval of Information Reading from several layers at a ime and multiple tracks at a time nearly impossible using the reflective technology of a CD/DVD - is easily achieved in FMD. This will allow for retrieval speedsof up to 1 gigabyte per second. Media Tolerances By using incoherent light to read data the FMD/FMC mediawill have far fewer restrictions in temperature range, vibration and air- cleanness during manufacturing. While early computer systems were designed and used for tasks that involved little interactions between theuser and the computer, today's graphical and multimedia information and computing environments require information displays that have higher performance, smaller size and lower cost. The market for display technologies also has been stimulated by the increasing popularity of hand-held computers, personal digital assistants and cellular phones; interest in simulated environments and augmentedreality systems; and the recognition that an improved means of connecting people and machines can increase productivity and enhance theenjoyment of electronic entertainment and learning experiences. For decades, the cathode raytube has been the dominant display device. The cathode ray tube creates an image byscanning a beam of electronsacross a phosphor-coated screen, causing the phosphors to emit visible light. The beam is generated by an electron gun and is passed through a deflection system that scans the beam rapidly left to right and top tobottom, a process called Rastering. A magnetic lens focuses the beam to create asmall moving dot on the phosphor screen. It is these rapidly moving spots of light ("pixels") that raster or"paint"the image on the surface of the viewing screen. Flat panel displays are enjoying widespread usein portable computers, calculators and other personal electronics devices.Flat panel displays can consist of hundreds of thousands of pixels, each of which is formed by one or more transistors acting on a crystalline material. In recent years, as the computer and electronics industries have made substantial advances in miniaturization, manufacturers have sought lighter weight, lower power and more cost-effective displays to enable the development of smaller portable computers and other electronic devices. Over the past few years, the density of the average programmable logic device has begun to skyrocket. The maximum number of gates in an FPGA is currently around 500,000 and doubling every 18 months. Meanwhile, the price of these chips is dropping. What all of this means is thatthe price of an individual NAND or NOR is rapidly approaching zero! And the designers of embedded systems are taking note. Some system designers are buying processor cores and incorporating them into system-on-a-chip designs; others are eliminating the processor and software altogether, choosing an alternative hardware-only design. As this trend continues, it becomes more difficult to separate hardware from software. After all, both hardware and software designers are now describinglogic in high-level terms, albeit in different languages, and downloading the compiledresult to a piece of silicon. Surely no one would claim that language choice alone marks a real distinction between the two fields. Turing's notion of machine-level equivalence and the existence of language-to-language translators have long ago taught us all that that kind of reasoning isfoolish. There are even now products that allow designersto create their hardware designs in traditional programming languages like C. So language differences alone are not enough of a distinction. Both hardware and software designs are compiled from a human-readable form into a machine-readable one. And both designs are ultimately loaded into some piece of silicon. Does it matter that one chip is a memory device and the other a piece of programmable logic? If not, how else can we distinguish hardware from software? Regardless of where the line is drawn, there will continue to be engineers like you and me who cross the boundary in our work. So rather than try to nail down a precise boundary between hardware and software design, we must assume that there will be overlap in the two fields. And we must all learn about new things. Hardware designers must learn how to write better programs, and software developers must learn how to utilize programmable logic. TYPES OF PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC Many types of programmable logic are available. The current range of offerings includes everything from small devices capable of implementing only a handful of logic equations to huge FPGAs that can hold an entireprocessor core (plus peripherals!). In addition to this incredible difference in size there is also much variation in architecture. In this section, I'll introduce youto the most common types of programmable logic and highlight the most important features of each type. PLDs At the low end of the spectrum are the original Programmable Logic Devices (PLDs). These were the first chips that could be used to implement a flexible digital logic design in hardware. In other words, you could remove a couple of the 7400-series TTL parts (ANDs, ORs, and NOTs) from your board and replace them with a single PLD. HART Field Communications Protocol extends this 4- 2OmA standard to enhance communication with smart fieldinstruments. According to Moore's Law, the number of transistors (complexity) on a microprocessor doubles approximately every 18 months. The latest 2 MB Prescott core possesses more than 160 million transistors; breaking the 200million mark is just a matter of time. Transistor count is one of the reasons that drive the industry toward thedual core architecture. Instead of using the availableastronomically high transistorcounts to design a new, morecomplex single core processor that would offer higher performance than the present offerings, chip makers have decided to put these transistors to use in producing two identical yet independent cores and combining them in to a single package. To them, this is actually a farbetter use of the available transistors, and in return should give the consumers more value for their money. Besides, with the single core's thermal envelope being pushed to its limit and severe current leakage issues that have hit the silicon manufacturing industryever since the transition to 90 nm chip fabrication, it's extremely difficult for chip makers (particulary Intel) to squeeze more clock speed out of the present single core design. Pushing for higher clock speeds is not a feasible option at present because of transistor currentleakage. And adding more features into the core will increase the complexity of the design and make it harder to manage. These arethe factors that have made the dual core option the moreviable alternative in making full use of the amount of transistors available. What is a dual core processor? A dual core processor is a CPU with two separate cores on the same die, each with itsown cache. It's the equivalentof getting two microprocessors in one. In a single-core or traditional processor the CPU is fed strings of instructions it mustorder, execute, then selectively store in its cache for quick retrieval. When data outside the cache is required, it is retrieved through the system bus from random access memory (RAM)or from storage devices. Accessing these slows down performance to the maximum speed the bus, RAM or storage device will allow, which is far slower than the speed of the CPU. The situation is compounded whenmulti-tasking. In this case theprocessor must switch back and forth between two or more sets of data streams and programs. CPU resourcesare depleted and performance suffers. In a dual core processor each core handles incoming data strings simultaneously to improve efficiency. Just astwo heads are better than one, so are two hands. Now when one is executing the other can be accessing the system bus or executing its own code. Adding to this favorable scenario, both AMDand Intel's dual-core flagships are 64-bit. To utilize a dual core processor, the operating system must be able to recognize multi-threading and the software must have simultaneous multi-threadi0ng technology (SMT) written into its code. SMT enables parallel multi-threading wherein the cores are served multi-threaded instructions in parallel. Without SMT the software willonly recognize one core. Adobe Photoshop is an example of SMT-aware software. SMT is also used with multi-processor systemscommon to servers. An attractive value of dual core processors is that they do not require a new motherboard, but can be used in existing boards that feature the correct socket. For the average user the difference in performance willbe most noticeable in multi-tasking until more software isSMT aware. The nanoscale marks the nebulous boundary between the classical and quantum mechanical worlds; thus, realization of nanotechnologypromises to bring revolutionary capabilities. Fabrication of nanomachines, nanoelectronics and other nanodevices will undoubtedlysolve an enormous amount ofthe problems faced by mankind today. Nanotechnology is currently in a very infantile stage. However, we now have the ability to organize matter on the atomic scale and there are already numerous products available as a direct result of our rapidly increasing ability to fabricate and characterize feature sizes less than 100 nm. Mirrors that don't fog, biomimetic paint with a contactangle near 180°, gene chips and fat soluble vitamins in aqueous beverages are some of the first manifestations of nanotechnology. However, immenant breakthroughs in computer science and medicine will be where the real potential of nanotechnology will first be achieved. Nanoscience is an interdisciplinary field that seeks to bring about mature nanotechnology. Focusing on the nanoscale intersection of fields such as physics, biology, engineering, chemistry, computer science and more, nanoscience is rapidly expanding. Nanotechnology centers are popping up around the world as more funding is provided and nanotechnology market share increases. The rapid progress is apparent by the increasing appearance of theprefix"nano"in scientific journals and the news. Thus,as we increase our ability to fabricate computer chips with smaller features and improveour ability to cure disease at the molecular level, nanotechnology is here. History of Nanotechnology The amount of space available to us for information storage (or otheruses) is enormous. As first described in a lecture titled, 'There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom' in 1959 by Richard P. Feynman, there is nothing besides our clumsy size that keeps us from using this space. In his time, it was not possible for us to manipulate single atoms or molecules because they werefar too small for our tools. Thus, his speech was completely theoretical and seemingly fantastic. He described how the laws of physics do not limit our ability to manipulate single atoms and molecules. Instead, it was our lack of the appropriate methods for doing so. Some of these cells act to receive light, while others interpret the information and send messages to the brain through the optic nerve. Thisis part of the process that enables us to see. In damaged or dysfunctional retina, the photoreceptors stop working, causing blindness. By some estimates, there are more than 10 million people worldwide affected by retinal diseases that lead to loss of vision. The absence of effective therapeutic remedies for retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has motivated the development ofexperimental strategies to restore some degree of visual function to affected patients. Because the remaining retinal layers are anatomically spared, several approaches have been designed to artificially activate this residual retina and thereby the visual system. At present, two general strategies have been pursued. The"Epiretinal"approach involves a semiconductor-based device placed above the retina, close to or in contact with thenerve fiber layer retinal ganglion cells. The information in this approach must be captured by a camera system before transmitting data and energy to the implant. The"Sub retinal"approach involves the electrical stimulation of the inner retina from the sub retinal space by implantation of a semiconductor-based micro photodiode array (MPA)into this location. The conceptof the sub retinal approach isthat electrical charge generated by the MPA in response to a light stimulus may be used to artificially alter the membrane potential of neurons in the remaining retinal layers in a manner to produce formed images. Some researchers have developed an implant system where a video camera captures images, a chip processes the images, and an electrode array transmits the images to the brain. It's called Cortical Implants. The Visual System The human visual system is remarkable instrument. It features two mobile acquisition units each has formidable preprocessing circuitry placed at a remote location from the central processing system (brain). Thesesatellites receive the signals from the broadcast stations located on Earth and rebroadcast them to the Earth. The viewer's dish picks up the signal from the satellite and passes it on to the receiver located inside the viewer's house. The receiverprocesses the signal and passes it on to the television.The DTH provides more than 200 television channels with excellent quality of reception along with teleshopping, fax and internet facilities. DTH television is used in millions of homes across United States, Europe and South East Asia. Direct to home television is a wireless system for delivering television programming directly to a viewer's house. Usually broadcasting stationsuse a powerful antenna to transmit radio waves to the surrounding area. Viewer's can pickup the signal with a much smaller antenna. The main limitation of broadcast television is range. The radiosignal used to broadcast television shoot out from the broadcast antenna in a straight line. Inorder to receive these signals, you have to be in the direct"line of sight"of the antenna. Small obstacles like trees or small buildings aren't a problem; but a big obstacle, such as Earth, will reflect these waves. If the Earth were perfectly flat, you couldpickup broadcast television thousands of miles from the source. But because the planet is curved, it eventually breaks the signal's line of sight. The other problem with broadcasttelevision is that the signal isoften distorted even in the viewing area. To get a perfectly clear signal like youfind on the cable one has to be pretty close to the broadcast antenna without too many obstacles in the wave. DTH Television solves both these problems by transmitting broadcast signals from satellites orbiting the Earth. Since satellites are high in the sky there are a lot more customers in the line of sight.Satellites television systems transmit and receive radio signals using specialized antennas called satellite dishes. The television satellites are all in geosynchronous orbit approximately 35,700 km above the Earth. In this way you have to direct the dish at the satellite only once, andfrom then on it picks up the signal without adjustment. More than 200 channels with excellent audio and video are made available. The dish required is quite small (30 to 95 cm in diameter). The Overall System Early satellite TV viewers were explorers of sorts. They used their expensive dishes to discover unique programming that wasn't necessarily intended for mass audiences. The dish and receiving equipment gave viewers the tools to pick up foreign stations, live feeds between different broadcast stations, NASA activities and a lot of other stuff transmitted using satellites. Some satellite owners still seek out this sort of programming on their own, but today, most Direct to home TV customers get their programming through a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) provider, such as DirecTV or the Dish Network. The provider selects programs and broadcasts them to subscribers as a set package. Basically, the provider's goal is to bring dozens or even hundreds of channels to your television ina form that approximates thecompetition, cable TV. Unlike earlier programming, the provider's broadcast is completely digital, which means it has much better picture and sound quality.
